Are you the type of person who likes to rack up points through any and every kind of offer you can get your hands on? If that’s the case, you are probably in a kind of proverbial “hog heaven” when you go to the drug store and pick up your prescriptions. Not only do most drug stores have loyalty programs, in which you can acquire points that can later be useful in your quest to acquire more prescriptions (or to pick up a bottle of wine or some vitamins, both of which may also be good for your health). You can also use your debit or credit card, and get points through your bank.

When you get enough points through the loyalty program, you can get a gift card of some sort – which can be a pretty nice little shopping spree for you. And when you get enough points through whatever point earning opportunity your bank offers up, you can get a prepaid credit card that you can use just about anywhere that such cards are accepted. What you can ultimately end up doing is just basically creating a sort of cycle, in which you gain points, use those points to get cards (which are great for taking the edge off of your prescription drug costs), and then use your cards to rack up even more points. It’s a pretty good cycle to get yourself into.

And if you want to keep your point earning going even better, keep in mind that a lot of drug stores will actually give you a gift card just for transferring in the prescriptions for the drugs you need too take. While you might never get rich by doing this, it can be a great way to pick up a few necessary items without having to pay for them (and without being chased around by a security guard).

Medications can be expensive, depending on the kind and the use. Medications you use on a frequent basis, such as ones you take daily or weekly, can carry an expense that adds up quickly. The cost can become overwhelming. Budgeting for purchasing medications can help offset costs and make purchasing easier, but you may need more help. Using a discount Rx card for medication expenses can make it easier to obtain medicines so you’ll have your prescriptions when you need them.

Most large pharmaceutical retail stores accept discount Rx cards. They are easy to use to manage the customer’s account. The card’s account will usually track what type of medicine the patient/customer uses, the date of his last refill, and the amount of his last purchase and will also provide a summary of the activity on his account for tax purposes. The prescription card benefits both the customer and the retail pharmacy store.

Since a pharmacy drug card is usually issued by a person’s employer, getting and using one is often as simple as a request. You can find out if your company offers a discount prescription by contacting your human resource department. If you decided not to take advantage of a discount program when your benefits began, you can find out if your employer has a clause allowing you to join at any time. Many companies offer this as an option. This is a preferable choice for employees who want to gather more information before they join.

Online retail purchasing for drugs is also a common process for cardholders. Buying prescription drugs over the Internet has become a preferred way for customers who don’t have immediate access to pharmacies. It can be a good option when a pharmacy doesn’t keep a certain medication in inventory. Customers like the convenience and flexibility of ordering online, and using a prescription card is an added bonus.

Drugs these days have become two things to most Americans. For one, they have become a necessity. As people’s lifestyles get more sedentary and their diets get loaded with more fat and more sugar, there is an increasing need for medication. The other thing drugs have become in this country is expensive. Without proper prescription coverage, drugs have always had a really high price, but what it seems like these days with insurances and the rising cost of co-pays, plus the immense money the drug companies are charging, that it is getting incredibly expensive to be on prescription drugs.

So how do you save the most on your drugs? Make certain that the first thing you do is switch to generic medication. The less it costs your insurance company, the less it’s going to cost you. This is a cold hard fact. Generic medications can save you up to 70 percent on your drug costs. And if you are thinking that the brand name drugs work better, think again. Name brand drugs and their generic partners have the same active ingredients so there is no reason to not take them.

Another thing you can do is monitor your own health. Taking your blood pressure regularly or buying other home medical supplies like a pulse oximeter to check the amount of oxygen you are getting to your heart can both help. The fact is this: if you do not stay on top of what is happening to your body, then you are doomed to suffer with it forever.

If you need medication, then stay on it and follow all the directions as asked. If you don’t, you run the risk of needing to go on more medication. This can only lead to even more additional medication down the road. Your health can have a domino effect.

A legal drug can still be addictive. 20.8 percent of Americans used prescriptions for non-medical purposes in the last year. Prescription drugs are the second most commonly abused drug, after marijuana but before cocaine and heroin. These three types of prescriptions drugs are some of the most commonly abused.

Amphetamines. These drugs are found in Ritalin, Cylert, and Adderall. While they have a calming affect on hyperactive people, they increase the activity and energy of normal people. This is why it is also called “speed.” The effect of these drugs is increased mental and physical energy, as well as euphoria. In abusive doses, these drugs cause the following symptoms: nausea, confusion, paranoia, irritability, heart attack, hallucinations, and even death. Withdrawal effects are similar to cocaine and include depression, fatigue, loss of memory, and confused thoughts.

Tranquillizers. These drugs are used to help insomnia and anxiety through depressing the nervous system. Minor tranquilizers include Xanax, Ativan, Valium, and Librium. Like alcohol, minor tranquillizers suppress the area of the brain that controls wakefulness and alertness. Because of this, they can be used to help during alcohol withdrawal.

Major tranquilizers are used to treat symptoms of paranoia, psychosis, and hallucinations. Typically abused due to their ability ot reduce anxiety, more and more of the drug is necessary in order to feel its effects as the taker’s tolerance rapidly increases.

Intoxication from these drugs can result in an elevating, disconnected feel from reality, difficulty in concentration, rapid breathing and heartbeat, memory loss, sleepiness, and confusion. More dangerous results from abuse can be depression, increased anxiety, coma, and even death. Withdrawal can be severe and includes insomnia, irritability, and anxiety.

Narcotics. These are drugs that are used to reduce or control pain. Common drugs are Codeine, methadone, morphine, and Vicodin. Usually taken orally, these medications affect the perception of pain both emotionally physically, through the central nervous system. Addiction can occur after use of two weeks. Withdrawal symptoms include headache, fever, dehydration, insomnia, muscle pain and twitching, nausea and vomiting. Withdrawal can last for months.

Four million Americans have been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. This is the most common anxiety disorder, less extreme than panic disorder, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is not very curable or preventable, but can be well managed. People who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder feel anxiety over common, non-threatening events. They worry over finances, health, work, family, or school for no apparent reason. They are constantly expecting and dreading disaster, and their concern is generally unrealistic or out of proportion. In order to be diagnosed as suffering from Generalized anxiety disorder, a person’s worry must be interfering with their ability to function in their everyday life.

A diagnosis is strictly from symptoms, which must last for at least six months. There is a long list of symptoms, but the following are common: an unrealistic expectation and fear of problems, irritability, muscle tension, headaches, upset stomach, fatigue, insomnia, and jitteriness or jumpiness.

Causes for generalized anxiety disorder is not fully known, but is probably caused by both biochemical and environmental reasons. Trauma or extreme stress, such as changes in the home or work life (divorce, death of a family member, job or location move), can impact the probability of developing generalized anxiety disorder and can also intensify its symptoms. Different levels of neurotransmitters in the brain may also be a reason for generalized anxiety disorder. It may also be passed down genetically, although the research is not confirmed in this case.
Generalized anxiety disorder is usually treated through medication or therapy. Medication can be both long term or short term. The short term medications, usually Xanax or Valium, are benzodiazepines. They leave the patient feeling relaxed. More long term medications are anti-depressants, such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Effexor. These take longer to affect the patient, but are more appropriate for longer periods of use. As well as medication, patients can also go to therapy, where they can change their thought patterns and behaviors that lead to anxiety. This therapy is aimed at helping people with generalized anxiety disorder recognize and correct the dysfunction in their thinking.

Medicine manufacturing or pharmaceutical manufacturing is a process of research and development of medicinal products. It is solely aimed at providing life-changing and life-saving health products. The onus has always been on producing medicines that have zero side effects.

The pharmaceutical industry in the US has gained far-reaching influence and acclaim, for its cutting-edge research and development in this space. This is driven by the fact that a high volume of its revenue is siphoned to research and development activities.

The R&D process is complicated, multistage and with high permutations and combination. There are two main stages, called the primary and secondary stage. The primary stage is concerned with the manufacture of the drug, and the secondary stage is concerned with the viability and safety of the application of the drug.

Thousands of compounds are tested in combination over a period of time. The results are compared and contrasted to find compounds that promote prevention, cure, alleviation or any other medicinal benefit of a disease, ailment, illness etc. This is no easy task. To aid this, are state-of-the-art pharmaceutical and medical equipment.

Pharmaceutical products come in different sizes, shapes, and combination. Some of the notable pharmaceutical product forms are capsules, tonics, ointments, dispensers, tablets, and so on.

New research is being undertaken to bring in new drugs. Technological evolution has made it easier to study the behavior of animal and plant cells in controlled environments. There has also been substantial ground made in the field of regenerative therapy, which deals with regeneration of organs, and tissues.

The civilized world has seen so many ailments and diseases that have recently erupted, or have been around for centuries. Custodians and patrons of the pharmaceutical industry always abide by the rule of pro-action and not reaction. It has always been difficult to predict variations of diseases, and come up with a fast responsive approach of delivering life-saving medical products.

Alternative medicine is a therapeutic practice that uses methods that are not part of conventional medicinal healing, or prevention. It is derived and established from years of successful case histories, rather than on any scientifically researched substantiation.

Practices like chiropractics, yoga, ayurveda, homeopathy, meditation etc are some of the examples of alternative medicine. Unlike conventional health medicine, alternative medicine has varied beginnings and methodologies. It can be based on conventional wisdom, spiritual orientations, customs and beliefs, derived knowledge, and wisdom of crowds.

Alternative medicine practitioners always find it difficult to convince the medical community of the efficacy, and viability of this practice. Considering there are many alternative medicine practices, if sufficient scientific research and proof is established, then an alternative medicine practice can become a mainstream medical practice. Mainstream health medicine or conventional health medicine is also called as allopathic medicine.

Alternative medicine is a lot of times associated with complementary medicines, and together they are called complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). A national survey has indicated that in the year 2007, close to forty percent Americans sought CAM. Complementary medicine is the use of alternative medicine with mainstream medicinal products and therapies.

CAM focuses on use of herbal treatments, holistic therapy, and body manipulation. Herbal medicines come as part of the natural products therapy. Supplements to the diet are effected with natural herbal nutrition products. Holistic therapies use mental and bodily healing processes like mental relaxation techniques, acupuncture, yoga, tai chi etc. Body manipulation is the use of physical stimuli to apply force or pressure to certain points in the body, so as to create a positive movement of muscles, tendons, ligaments, or bones.

Alternative medicine has had its calling in cases where conventional health medicines or allopathic health medicines failed to deliver the results. In dire situations, people tend to turn to the “unknown” just as they turn to spirituality, seeking solace and miracles. But the best part has been that alternative medicine has had a good degree of success, and millions of people to vouch for its efficacy.

Drug design is an innovative methodology of finding new drugs or medicines based on bio-molecular data. In other words, drugs are essentially complementary molecules of a bio-molecule, and exhibit the same functions of a bio-molecule. A bio-molecule is produced naturally by living organisms. They could be lipids, vitamins, hormones, monosaccharide, DNA, RNA etc.

The intent of drug design is to enable drug molecules to bind successfully to bio-molecular targets. This means it is essentially the design and development of ligands. Ligands are substances with the ability to bind to bio-molecules. The binding is not permanent, and it can be dissociated. This means a drug design effort has to factor-in binding properties of a ligand. Strong binding of a ligand to a target bio-molecule is because of intermolecular forces. Binding affinity is not an indicator for the efficacy of the ligand though. Based on the binding there are two types: selective and non-selective binding. Selective binding ligands only bind to select bio-molecules, whereas non-selective binding ligands bind to any type of bio-molecule.

What was discussed till now is a ligand based approach to drug design. There is another approach to drug design called the structure-based approach. A three dimensional structural analysis is derived of a bio-molecule or a set of bio-molecules. Using this data, drug molecules are designed to combine with the bio-molecules. Special graphic software is used to aid this. The structural image is obtained by using crystallography techniques. X-rays are beamed into the target bio-molecule to get a graphical definition about the arrangement of atoms in it. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) is another way to ascertain the structure of a bio-molecule.

These developments to map the structure of bio-molecules have lead to better drug design. It has enabled pharmaceutical manufacturers to better understand the nuances of providing receptor-specific ligands. Now the situation has progressed to add computer-aided processes as well. There have been huge strides made in the field of molecular mechanics that enable computational accuracy of drug-design fits with regards to ligands and bio-molecular receptors.

Adolescent medicine deals with medicine that specifically targets people who are in their adolescent years. The age group is 9 to eleven for girls. For boys it ranges from eleven to fourteen. Adolescent medicine is a health medicine that takes into account the various biological processes associated with adolescence.

When girls enter adolescence they are exposed to biological changes related to puberty. This means that adolescent health medicine should consider elements of gynecology and endocrinology. Both boys and girls are subject to conditions related to dermatology in this stage. So, adolescence medicine has to factor-in elements of dermatology as well.

Adolescent health medicine also involves the use of psychology, and nutrition. This is based on the fact, that adolescents need a combination of physical and mental health support systems, and this type of health medicine answers that need. Adolescent health medicine providers approach the treatment form in a parts-of-the-whole approach. Complete information about the patient is obtained before embarking on any kind of treatment plan.

A treatment plan in adolescent health medicine is based on a combination of lifestyle and physiological attributes. A behavioral analysis is obtained to gauge the adolescent’s lifestyle patterns at home, college, or other places. Sexual activities and habits are assessed. Performance in academics and extra-curricular activities is taken into consideration. If the patient is into substance abuse, analysis will determine the nature, intensity, and propensity to substance abuse.

One of the chief worries in adolescent years is the high susceptibility of adolescents to engage in unprotected sex. This gap can be bridged by proper sex education. Sex education is an integral part of adolescent health medicine. This goes a long way in helping adolescent people shape-up into responsible, and erudite adults.

The best way to administer adolescent health medicine is to have periodic examinations. These examinations will focus on physical and neurological tests, that can range from testing reproductive organs, to testing mental health and well being.

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas, and serves as a regulator of glucose levels in the body. Glucose is a source of energy to the body. All the physiological functions conducted in the body need internal energy, and glucose is the primary source for that. Insulin makes the liver to pick up glucose from the blood and store it as glycogen. This means that as long as insulin is being produced, glycogen is being worked-out as the primary energy source.

Low levels of insulin in the body result in diabetes mellitus. In this case, insulin from being a hormone, doubles-up as a health medicine, in that, it is administered externally into the blood stream. There are basic stages of diabetes. These are: Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes affects people up to the age group of thirty. In these cases, insulin is the primary health medicine, due to lack of internal bodily production. The commonest form of diabetes is Type 2. This condition is not necessarily due to lack of insulin in the body, rather it is more to do with the inability to use insulin. This condition can also be termed as insulin-resistance. Diabetes during pregnancy is gestational diabetes.

Before looking at a health medicine for your diabetes, ascertain with the help of your doctor the type of diabetes you have. Diabetes health medicines are insulin, and diabetes pills. Insulin is administered into the body using syringes to inject it into the body. There’s another device called the insulin pump that delivers subcutaneous insulin injection. The insulin pump consists of a pump with a battery, a storage area, and an infusion system.

The other type of health medicine for diabetes is a diabetes pill. Diabetes pills help in the reduction or regulation of glucose levels in the blood stream. Oral pills are taken regularly as part of a prescribed treatment plan. Most often, oral pills are accompanied by a structure diet plan. It is important to note that no pill is a wonder drug, because most come with side effects.
